Sassafras Gifts... Bringing southern tradition and the arts to your home...

Coming Home with Family and Friends is a cookbook designed by me and includes treasured recipes from my family and friends, including students. This cookbook was my 2005 Christmas project and over 40 were distributed as gifts the first year.

I encourage you to make the holidays special by developing projects which are given from the heart.

I have included one sample recipe that is one of my favorites from my cookbook.  This was submitted to me by my sister-in-law, Tamara.

GRAPE PIE

3 cups Concord Grapes

1/2 to 3/4 cups sugar

1 tbsp butter

3 tbsp flour

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 - 9" unbaked pie shell and top crust

Instructions:

Stem grapes, wash and drain.  Squeeze grapes from skins and set skins aside.  Simmer remaining pulp for 5 minutes.  Remove from heat and put through a food press (to separate seeds from usable pulp.)  Stir pulp and skins together.  Blend in flour and sugar.  Add lemon juice and butter.  Spoon into pie shell and cover with the top crust.  Bake at 425F for 10 minutes.  Reduce temperature to 350F, cooking for an additional 30 minutes.

Special Note:  Instead of top crust, you can mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup melted butter and sprinkle on top of pie.
